Hokkaido Fair at Isetan

Yubari melon soft serve ice cream 1 – when I walked into the fair

What comes to mind when you see this?

Hokkaido butter milk candies, fresh sea salt caramels, kinako & sea salt caramels

Yes peeps, The Hokkaido Fair at Isetan Scotts is back, this time billed as the largest Hokkaido Fair ever held out of Japan so they say. Scuttled down on the 1st day to check out the goodies before I have to jostle even for breathing space in the weekends. Yups, the fair is on a very large scale alright. I definitely couldn’t miss my favorite Yubari soft serve ice cream, it’s new, then also got myself the usual Hokkaido milk candies & fresh sea salt caramels, scrambled cheesecakes yummers! (yes you hear me right... scrambled cheesecakes), soufflé cheesecakes, pure pumpkin flakes for soup etc. (see end of post for cheesecakes updates)

scrambled cheesecake & soufflé cheesecake

Then there’s everybody’s favorite seasoned dried scallops, stuffed squid, crab bentos, squid ink gyozas, king crab steamed mantous, very hot-selling potato curry buns yada yada... there’s even Premium Sapporo draft beer at $3.50 per paper cup. :P

But what I’m most taken with is this salt caramel croissant from Pullman Bakery. The Japanese are really the smartest food engineers. The West use salt caramel in confectionaries, these geniuses make salt caramel croissants. Clever. Got myself one for breakfast tomorrow yums. Can’t wait to wake up!

It’s only the 1st day damn. Doesn’t look like a lot I bought today here, but these are discounting the snacks & munchies I bought to fuel up as I meandered my way through the crowd. Round 1 Day 1 and I’ve already spent a bomb. Trust me when I say this coz my caramels alone already cost $25. Sometimes I wonder if such fairs are hazardous.

Yubari melon soft serve ice cream 2 – when I finally decided to walk out of the fair

Updates (20 May):

1. Just had the scrambled cheesecake. It's really delicious! Do try them!

2. There are 2 counters selling
soufflé cheesecakes, buy yours from Otaru where you'd get the scrambled cheesecakes. The counter by Hakodate just next to Otaru sells them too, but don't get the soufflé cheesecakes from there, the woman has an attitude problem. Service at Otaru is excellent.

3. Salt caramel croissant is pretty darn good too! Urgh... now I need to return to get more.

hehe not hazardous, it's an occasional splurge :). sometimes without the fair i can spend like tons on the snacks! I'm crazy about the japanese snacks!!

now i kinda regret not heading down, but shudder at the thought of spending too much and packing on the cals haha :D

Many thanks for the reminder Ice. I had herd about this fair but forgot to take note of the dates. Looks like there are lots of delicious goodies to be had there and so I'll have to stop in sometime soon.

Hey all, do head down soon. It's drawing in the crowds even on the 1st day. Check out this link for more info:

I still have lots to get, the corn chocolate & cheesecakes. The steamed taraba crab buns & scallop buns look very delicious & intriguing, you guys should give them a try.

cavalock: There're loads of seasoned dried scallops in all variations imaginable, but these are easily the most expensive stuff at the fair, some cost up to $180. I think you & imp will like them!

I remember when I was in Hokkaido airport, waiting for my flight back to SG, this lady let me try this chilled hokkaido cheesecake.. it was sublime.. I really wished I bought it, but I had already spent my last japanese yen and didnt want to max out my credit card... so i didnt. To this day, I dream of finding this ethereally textured cheesecake... after reading your post, I shall pop down to the fair! *fingers crossed*! The ice cream looks good too... :)

i went too! had the steamed crab bun and melon bun, the sesame gelato, etc. not very impressed with the curry bun tho. you make me regret not trying the croissant (i'm anti-european cuisine for now, you see =P) and cheesecake souffle!

(i think i need to go back to the fair and "waste" more money too! >.<)

vivien: Hope you got your cheesecakes! :) They're very smooth & delicious!

cavalock: Saw your pictures. Yea, you should return again on a weekday for more stuff.

wenxiu: The melon bun looked cool, was it any good? I thought the salt caramel croissant & scrambled cheesecake were the best stuff I got. And the yubari melon soft serve is better than the gelato. Go grab the squid ink siew mais aka gyozas since you're anti-European.

did you try the fruit omelette? I just finished it and i think it's really yummy. if i'm not wrong it's custard, whipped cream, fruit cocktail wrapped in a very light and melt in your mouth sponge cake. very delish.

i love the souffle cheesecake and i totally agree with you about that woman with the attitude problem. no sample and also when say don't want to buy her face turned damn black.

i tried that version before and i think the counter selling the scrambled cheesecake is so much better. primarily it isn't frozen. that's where the texture of the souffle can be tasted and loved! the frozen one just accumulate moisture and by the time you eat it, it's not so heavenly anymore!!

i havent eaten my salt caramel croissant. haha but from you, i believe it's gonna be good! :D

oh it was like melon-cheese bun. the one i got was steamed from frozen, so only the exterior was hot, but the filling was chilled. got home and microwave it, which was much better. (:

i think i will head back to the fair this sat to try the melon soft serve and croissant and cheesecake! hahah, you're a bad influence, ya know? ;)

claudine: I didn't try the fruit omelette though it looked nice. There were too much food I had to choose judiciously. Hope you enjoyed your salt caramel croissant. :)

wenxiu: Don't remind me! Now I need to go back to reload... but I think you should go on a weekday if possible coz it's alot less crowded plus there are lots of "weekday specials only" buys & discounts.
